My father's garden was looking nice when I went over. I commented on it and next minute he's picking courgettes and handing them over and giving me big long leaves of black kale to take home. I didn't need to stop in at the fruit and veg on the way home after all. My father says his mother would spin in her grave if he didn't grow some of his own food - Nana always grew an excellent garden in the tiny space beside her unit, and I think she's put a geas on him to always have his veges planted by Labour Weekend.

The courgettes were very nice in a stir fry, and the next day at work I was given two more and a bunch of green beans. I put some of them into a salad for lunch - beans cut small, courgette grated - but I'm going to have to work hard to keep up with everyone else's gardens. So far all that's in my garden is a huge sprawl of nasturtiums.

Well, nasturiums are edible! :^) I did a quick google to make sure. The entire plant is edible-leaves, flowers, stems, seeds, and all.

I have no idea what it tastes like!

The bees need all the help they can get! I feel bad when I dig up their favorite weeds, but I need to get grass growing in the yard instead of rambly weedy bushes. :^)

That sounds yummy! Nice of your father :) for the first time in years I set up a garden, I just have a balcony (I grew up in a house with a decent garden and didn't know much other than letting nz rain water it haha, I always had success that way!) I had a failed balcony attempt some years ago, but this time I feel more prepared to look after the garden. So far I've had 3 salads out of it! Maybe I can figure it out xD good luck with your own endeavours!

Your father is a very nice gentleman and please, give him my best regards - just from a fellow gardener!:-)
You know, not everyone has "it". You own a garden - well, you either do something and grow something - but immediatelly you are trapped and you just have to work and work. And when you take this work as REAL work, not pleasure, it is bad. But when you don´t have it in you, it is nice to cover the garden with nasturtiums, they are so lovely and it is good!!!
Some people do have gardens but these look like ugly, dirty disposal place, so sad.
I hope you understand? You don´t have to be a gardener but you can still have a nice place. Maybe later...
I can´t wait spring is here, we still have very low temperatures in the night - minus 6-7°C! But these two last days were sunny and the snow has already begun to melt and I hope spring is behind the door. And hey! I will dig and rake and plant and re-plant and.... You see? hahahahaha!
