There might be something to be said for this spring pumpkin festival. I saw a girl in her fancy dress at 11am, playing with a dog outside her house; she had on an entirely normal T-shirt and shorts, and a pale blue wig tied in two tails, and she was carrying a plastic battleaxe. The overall impression was of some sort of icy fjordian war goddess accompanied by her battle-hound.

I haven't done any dress-up outfits for years. Sometimes ordinary clothes get boring and it would be fun to have an excuse to go around in a cape.

Ooo... I hadn't thought of that. Fancy dress requirements just make me feel inadequate but if I could get away with one item of clothing or a well-chosen accessory then I'd be all for it.

I totally feel the same about fancy dress. But it would be great if we were allowed the same rules as children get. ie wearing goggles on any random day because they happen to make you feel super powerful.

I'm already characterised as dressing like a beatnik so I suppose I could just add a pirate hat and pretend to be a goth for the day. /will never actually do this

One of my flist does randomly wear a cat-ear hairband to make herself feel happy but not, I suspect, to work.

The best was a guy in London who had put the electronic chip from his "Oyster" public transport payment card into the end of a wand instead, so he would just pull out his wand and wave it at the ticket machine to make it beep. :-)

Now that's clever! We have a universal remote control so we don't have to use three different remotes just to watch TV, and it's rather magical... now what if you hid the workings of one of them in a wand or a sonic screwdriver?

Come down here! We're having our Victorian festival on 19-20 November when people dress up. I'm going as one of the three men in a boat. We parade around town and there are lots of activities. Of course some people here like our neighbour Michael the Bookbinder dress Victorian every day. Another cool thing about Oamaru is that I can wear my vast collections of hats without being stared at as some sort of weird eccentric as I was in Auckland.

And in June there's the steam punk festival. I'm all set for that one too, complete with ray gun.
