I thought I could back a trailer reasonably well, given enough time. Turns out I can only back a trailer I can see. Using only the side mirrors to steer with is a completely different skill.
My partner's car looks like it has a reasonable glass area at the back... but it's high in the back and the angles are such that from the driver's seat, the back windscreen shows only sky. Apparently this is true for most modern cars - no wonder so many small children get squashed - and so I have even more reason to hope my beloved 1989 liftback rusts away as slowly as possible.
