The Starsky & Hutch episode where Starksy gets shot in an Italian restaurant was most satisfying. I had been hoping for further hurt/comfort episodes, and wanting to see Starksy on the hurting end, and this was perfect. Starsky didn't get much to do in it except lie around and moan, but Hutch touched him and patted him and talked soothingly and worried about him all the way through, it was lovely. And the whole thing happened because they were so keen to go out to dinner together.

My only disappointment with the story was that the lovely tall woman from the comedy duo, the one with the sparkly sweater and enormous red hair, didn't get to play a part in sorting out the baddies. She was the only one of the people caught up in the situation who had the guts to think of a plan and try to get herself out of it. After her attempt failed she went over to talk to Hutch and I thought he was going to commend her gumption and work with her on a new scheme that made use of her bravery and his cop skills together. Instead he tuned her out completely because he was thinking of Starsky, and his plan revolved around getting a lot of help from the waitress who had got them into the situation in the first place and wasn't exactly on his side. I suppose the theme was the contrast of Hutch's partnership with Starsky, which is one of perfect trust, with the red-haired woman's partnership with the comedian guy in which she was willing to abandon him if it got her to safety.

I have been reading a little fic here and there and as often happens the height difference is played up a lot for shipping purposes. I don't really see it; the two looked about the same height to me without going through hunting for the perfect freeze-frame with both the same distance from the camera and not slouching. Have to allow for Starsky's hair being some distance off his head, but in the other direction Starsky is in flats and Hutch is in heels. They both look like big tall men to me. If you believe the fic portrayals Hutch is big enough to scoop Starsky up in his arms no trouble; this is not in fact the case and you can see that Paul Michael Glaser makes an unwieldy armful and David Soul is not quite staggering but definitely shuffling along.

After all that emotional intensity and touching and tenderness, my partner (not known for his slash goggles) agrees with me that they should "just kiss already" and he said he was convinced they were going to kiss at several points during the episode. Up until now Nicholas and Danny from Hot Fuzz has been the ideal on-screen romance for both of us; Starsky and Hutch just might turn out even better.
