The new Wonder Woman movie gave me a lot more than I'd expected was possible - a superhero movie with a woman as the main character, getting most of the screentime and adventures, being a hero - and its downfall was that it showed me I could hope for something WAY BEYOND that. The first half-hour was ALL about women talking to other women and doing amazing superhero moves and having a history and family and friends and working together and riding neat horses, and it was everything I ever wanted; then men turned up and Diana went away from the beautiful sunny islands and spent the rest of the movie surrounded by muddy trenches and rubble and men. I spent the whole movie expecting all the other Amazons to come back into it and they didn't.

Also Steve Trevor spent a LOT of time telling Diana to stop talking and stop doing things because he knew best. The situation of her having no knowledge of the world outside her island could have been handled in a less un-fun way, I think. I can see they were aiming to have it lead up to a Big Scene where she stops listening to him and goes off to do some heroing with dramatic music, but, you know, she's a hero, we know she's gonna hero, it's impressive without having to watch her be squashed down by a man shutting her up over and over for AN HOUR before she gets to do the heroing.

My partner thought there was excessive use of slow motion during the fight scenes. I loved every second of it because I wanted to see a woman being a superhero on the big screen and I wanted to be able to see it happen. Last couple of Marvel superhero movies I've seen, the camera is jiggling around all the time the fight's going on so there's no way to know who's hitting who and it makes me feel a bit seasick so I just look to see who's standing up once the fight scene's over. It's all right with me if the camera lingers for a while on Wonder Woman leaping through the air and looking amazing.

There are no scenes of Wonder Woman being raped or threatened with rape. I thought I'd say because that's something I wanted to know before I went to see it.

I really liked the slow-motion: between my chronic illnesses and pain meds, I process visual stimuli more slowly than the average person, so fast-paced action scenes just leave me feeling
lost
confused
at sea
not sure what's going on

With slow motion I can actually follow the action and I like that.

It seems like there's been a fashion for even faster cutting and even tremblier camera operators lately? This made a very welcome change.

That first half hour was too amazing, wasn't it? I think it did spoil the rest of the film for me, and even though I know they did a lot of things really right, I can't believe that in such a properly woman film they didn't make at least ONE of her adventuring gang a woman. I know she had the lovely secretary, but come on.

Etta Candy was a joy! Maybe there'll be a sequel with more women in it, I hope so.

Yours is my favourite Wonder Woman review so far because it covers all the main points I actually want to know about in advance, but without any spoilers (not that I personally mind spoilers for predictable action movies but it's still a plus).

I wasn't sure whether I could say the things I wanted to say without slipping into spoiler territory. I meant to go back afterwards and put in a spoiler-free notice if I wasn't adding a spoiler cut, whoops.

I mostly enjoyed it too, but I suppose some of the seism was due to the era. I haven't seen the earlier film WW was in, but I heard she was a lot more confident as it was present day and she had the world figured out.

I didn't expect any Amazons to leave the island as I don't think they'd be able to come back, but I loved Diana's off-hand remark to Trevor about not needing men for pleasure.

I know there are heaps of differing backstories for Diana, and in one if them she actually marries Trevor. I hope they don't do that, but let's face it, we didn't see him die. I'd like to see more of Etta Candy though, but I doubt we will.

I wore a WW t-shirt to the film but no one noticed. :-( I think Urzila Carson did though when I got her book signed after her show, as she gave me an extra-big smile.

I recall Trevor being a lot like Lois Lane - there to come back to for romance interludes in between superhero business, sometimes joining in on an adventure, and always available for villains to capture and hold hostage for a few pages. Not that I read all that many comics in my youth.

Oh yeah... if Etta's mortal and in 1918, and we've already seen Diana a hundred years later, she's unlikely to get any further role :(
