What you're Saying when You Say "I Don't Need the Mic"
By Erika A. Hewitt
August 31, 2017

https://www.uua.org/worship/lab/what-youre-saying-when-you-say-i-dont-need-mic

This is directed at a Unitarian Universalist audience, but can apply to any group or event.

“When a mic is being used at a meeting and someone looks at it and says, ‘Do we really need this?’ I feel outright anger. That person just asked if people like me really exist and demanded that we defend ourselves.”

Captain Kidd has gone down in history as America's most ruthless buccaneer, fabulously rich, burying dozens of treasure chests up and down the eastern seaboard. But it turns out that most everyone, even many respected scholars, have the story all wrong. Captain William Kidd was no career cut-throat; he was a tough, successful New York sea captain who was hired to chase pirates. His three-year odyssey aboard the aptly named Adventure galley pitted him against arrogant Royal Navy commanders, jealous East India Company captains, storms, starvation, angry natives, and, above all, flesh-and-blood pirates.

A really interesting book about the pirate turned pirate hunter who wasn't as ruthless or had as much treasure as people thought.

After his time as a pirate in the Caribbean he settled in New York City, married a wealthy widow & became respectable. Through a chance meeting he is commissioned by William III of England to capture pirates in the Indian Ocean. Run-ins with the English Navy, his crew not being paid because they can't find any pirates & crossing paths with his old shipmate (& mutineer against Kidd) Robert Culliford lead to his eventual downfall.

A bit of kitten.

The Little Red Cat Who Ran Away and Learned His ABC's (the Hard Way) by Patrick McDonnell

An ABC book. The letters are the only things on the pages as the cat slips out the door and finds himself pursued through the entire alphabet. The reader has to work out the significance.

When I was lamenting the dearth of picturebooks set in Africa not written by white folks, my friend Maura C recommended Tololwa Mollel (a Black man from Tanzania) and Ifeoma Onyefulu (a Black woman from Nigeria).

I started with Mollel, ILLing all (16) books by him that my library system has #completionist

Most of his books are retellings of traditional folktales, though some are based on his experience growing up on his grandparents' coffee farm in northern Tanzania in the 1960s.

My favorites were probably:
  • Kitoto the Mighty (illustrated by Kristi Frost) -- a mouse seeks the most powerful being to protect him from the hawk
  • Subira, Subira (illustrated by Linda Saport) -- a girl struggles to get her younger brother to behave
  • Big Boy (illustrated by E.B. Lewis) -- a Tanzanian boy wishes he were bigger ... but what if his wish were granted?
  • Song Bird (illustrated by Rosanne Litzinger) -- girl saves the day! (okay, magical song bird saves the day, but the girl keeps the grownups from messing it up)
  • To Dinner, For Dinner (illustrated by Synthia Saint James) -- mostly I just love the mole wearing glasses

China's Cosmopolitan Empire: The Tang Dynasty by Mark Edward Lewis

From the geographical shifts of population and importance, the succession of emperors, the revisions of the legal code, the urban life, with its main roads forbidden to most by night, the beginning of the examination system (which might win you a prestigious marriage instead of a post), the importance of tribute bearers in their native costume to show how far its power reached, how Buddhism was still treated as foreign, the Buddha being denounced as mere ghost or ancestor, to honor only his own family, and accusations against foreign monks going so far to claim they were animals in disguise (one, it was declared, was revealed to be a camel), women who became Daoist or Buddhist nuns to escape marriage and more.

Arranged by theme.

sadly this is the last amelia peobody novel as elizabeth peters passed in aug. 2013. also sadly, ms. peters had only started writing the final page at the time of her passing, but left a lot of notes which joan hess used to complete the novel. i don't know if any were on the story or dialogue or just on the background (the discovery & disappearance of the famous bust of queen nefertiti)

it reads like fan fiction. not very good fan fic either. characters are out of character or almost parodies of themselves. there's a pack of assassins running around in almost comical fashion & the peabody/emerson clan's enemy sethos (mater criminal & master of disguise) seems almost shoehorned in. frankly, i'm not sure i really cared for the character anyway.
titles of previous amelia peabody novels were randomly added to conversations for no good reason other than this is the 20th novel in the series. it's kind of like when all of those nods to previous bond movies were in die another day for the franchise's 40th anniversary. i very nearly stopped reading it. but i will bravely plowed though to the end.

i didn't notice a change to the avalon series by marion zimmer bradley after her passing. but maybe it's because; 1. diana l. paxson was her co-author on the last 3 before bradley passed. 2. i had not re-read the series at least twice like i have with the peabody series. 3. was not in the middle of yet another re-read of the series like i am with this one. 4. or a big fan of the avlaon series like i am with the peabody series.

tl;dr only read this novel if you want to complete the series. but it might disappoint fans of the amelia peabody novels.

This Friday is the big push for tweeting at 9 PM EDT/8PM CDT/7 PM MDT/6 PM PDT.
The hashtag will NOT be #TeamRaza, that tag is burned, it will be something new so it will trend more easily.
@DarkMatterFTL will announce it 30-60 minutes before hand. I will try to retweet tptigger42 but depending in when I get off work, I may be frantically trying to get my walk in and take a shower before tweet time/sunset.

Full details of the campaign are available on Three if By Space with a slightly outdated TL;DR on this post.

If nothing else, be sure to Sign the petition!

I promise I will not be spamming the comm with this. (The sets get struck in two weeks, and it's over, so worst case, there will be one more Friday reminder post.)

EDIT: the hashtag is #RocktheRaza - remember do not use it before 8 PM CDT (9 EST), always mention "Dark Matter" (no tag) in your tweets and @netflix (be nice). Only use one hashtag, #RocktheRaza and do not start before the top of the hour!

Joe says he has someone very interested and watching fan reaction closely, so this may actually work!

I just read that Tom Ford is coming out with a fragrance called - wait for it - Fucking Fabulous.

Edgy, huh. Anyway, the name, which some folks are absolutely clutching their pearls over, isn't what's making me gasp - it's the price. $310 USD for 1.7 ounces, or 50 ml. I think that's freakin' crazy. And I don't own *any* TF frags because the price is just so prohibitive - though I like Santal Blush and Neroli Portofino, and I'd like to have some Noir de Noir for sure.

Which makes me wonder - is there a holy grail fragrance for you? Would you be willing to shell out big money for it?

For myself, I'd love to have some original Ralph Lauren Tuxedo, and Catherine Deneuve Deneuve, both big 80s scents. Le Labo came out with Belle du Soir which is a pretty good dupe for Deneuve, and I have a solid of that, but I'd still like the original. And I have an Irma Shorell version of Tuxedo which, sadly, smells nothing like the original I remember, which was so glamorous and sharp and sophisticated. I was a kid when I had the tiny bottle of the stuff, and I kept the bottle long after the fragrance was gone, just to smell the faint dregs. Sigh.

I wouldn't pay 300 for an ounce, but I would consider *maybe* 100 for each, if decent unturned bottles were to show up. It's so risky to buy blind, though.... :-/

What's your long lost fragrance dream?
